30. Indulgences

Catholic Position

¶1498 Through indulgences the faithful can obtain the remission of
temporal punishment resulting from sin for themselves and also for the
souls in Purgatory.

¶1471 The doctrine and practice of indulgences in the Church are closely linked to the effects of the sacrament of Penance.

Scripture Says

Romans 6:23
23  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

James 1:15
15  Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

1 Corinthians 15:3
3  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also
received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

Ephesians 2:8-10
8  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9  Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good
works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Titus 3:5
5  Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according
to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing
of the Holy Ghost;

Commentary

  • Jesus saves; He doesn’t need me to approach any church.
  • Will the requirement to pay indulgences never end? Yes, Jesus saves.

The Conversion Center is a faith ministry. As such we depend upon the generous contributions and gifts of our visitors, friends and other supporters. We welcome your help in reaching the unsaved everywhere.
