“If I’m a good person, giving to charities, obeying the ten commandments, following the golden rule, praying every day, doing all that the church expects from me, and going to church every week, then I should get merits in order to be eligible to go to heaven, right? Wrong! The Bible is clear that being good or doing good works doesn’t save anybody from hell. Look at what the Holy Bible says:
Matthew 7:22, (Jesus said,) “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? And in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
Romans 3:20, “Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his (God’s) sight.”
Galatians 2:16, “Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law… “
Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works lest any man should boast.”
II Timothy 1:9, Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works … “
These five passages quoted from the Bible clearly state that works of any kind do not accumulate merits, making any individual eligible for heaven. Why isn’t human effort a part of the equation for making a person deserving of heaven?
Because man is spiritually dead (his death caused by sin), thus, he us unable to save himself through good works. Romans 5:12, “Wherefore, as by one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Ezekiel 18:20, “The soul that sinneth, it shall die … ” Romans 6:23, “For the wages (payment) of sin is death (eternal separation from God) … “
Because man is spiritually dead he is spiritually corrupted beyond human repair. Psalm 14:2-3, “The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.” Psalm 94:11, “The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity (empty).” Psalm 143:2, ” … For in thy (God’s) sight shall no man living be justified.” Ecclesiastes 7:20, “There is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Isaiah 64:6, “We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses (good works) are as filthy rags.” John 3:19, “This is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” Romans 3:10-12, “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
If man could help save himself through good works, then Christ’s sacrifice on the cross would not be needed, for Christ came on earth to die for the payment of man’s sin because man, in his spiritually dead and corrupted state, was hopelessly unable to save himself. Galatians 2:21, “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law (works), then Christ is dead in vain.”
Since man cannot make or help make himself eligible for heaven, how does man get to heaven? Man is made eligible for heaven by the grace (unmerited favor) of God. Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is a gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast.” A gift is not something that you work for, it is given as a favor. Romans 6:23, “…The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” II Corinthians 9:15, “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.”
What must you do to be eligible for heaven? Acknowledge to God that you are a sinner, Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Acknowledge to God that you are helplessly lost, Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death.” Acknowledge to God that you cannot save yourself, Ephesians 2:8, “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourself.” Believe on the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, I Corinthians 15:1-4, ” … By which ye are saved…how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” Receive Christ as your personal Savior, John 1:12, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons (children) of God, even to them that believe on his name.”
Did you receive Christ as your personal Savior? Then God’s gift of eternal life is yours! You are permanently His child and heaven is your eternal home, John 10:28-29, Jesus said) “And I give them (His children who He calls sheep) eternal life; and they shall never perish (in hell), neither shall any man pluck them out (take their salvation) of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.”
